There are many things you need to do to make sure your cat(s) live(s) a long, happy life. There are also many things you shouldn't do to ensure their happiness and healthiness.

NEVER consider declawing. Declawing a cat is the same as cutting your fingers off at the knuckle. Instead, train your cat to use a scratching post or look for other ways to train them.

Many cats enjoy milk, but it will give some cats diarrhea.

Cats shouldn't be fed tuna exclusively; it lacks taurine, an essential nutrient required for good feline health.

Don't avoid taking your cat to the vet for check-ups/shots, and don't ignore something you think is little that could be a symptom for a sickness. Cats tend to keep their problems to themselves, so many owners think their cat is perfectly healthy when they actually may be suffering from a life-threatening disease.

A steady diet of dog food may cause blindness in your cat - it lacks taurine.

Cats have 32 muscles that control the outer ear (human have 12). A cat can rotate its ears independently 180 degrees and can turn in the direction of sound 10 times faster than those of the best watchdog.

Introducing the New Pet

Got a new cat & already have a pet - a dog, other cats- at home (Or vice-versa)? Here are some things to do & keep in mind when bringing the newest family member home.

1. Put your new friend on one side of a transparent door & your other pet(s) on the other side so they can see each other. If you don't have a clear door, have someone hold the other pet(s) & another hold the new pet.
-
2. Keep the new pet separate from the others for awhile so the new pet can get used to the environment first.
-
3. Let the pets interact once in awhile, but watch all their interactions.
-
4. Let the other pets know that everything (their attention, your love for them, etc) is still the same, just that another pet will get their share too.
-
5. Reassure the new pet that they're safe in this new place & show them around a bit to get used to the big change.

Caring for your New Kitten

Cats are independent animals, but they, especially kittens, still need to be cared for & loved. Here's some things you should do after bringing your new friend home:

1. Keep your kitten in 1 room until he's used to his surroundings. A house is big to a little kitten.

2. If you have any other pets, have them see each other & get used to their smell first. When you let them be together, watch them carefully.
-
3. Be sure to have plenty of extra time you can use to play with your kitten. Even the shyest ones need some attention. Kittens are very energetic & playful, so take the time to have fun with them!
-
4. Remember that even though the kitten looks like a cute stuffed toy to play around with, it's really a live animal that needs to be handled with carefully. Don't pick it up off the floor like a toy; you need to be gentle, especially with kittens. They need to learn to trust you.
-
5. Keep an eye on your little friend. They should be in 1 room for a while, but they can still be little troublemakers sometimes.

Bringing Home a Kitten

Getting a kitten is a big change, especially if it's your first. But before you bring home that furry feline, make sure to kitten-proof your home.

- Put away all chemicals out of a curious kitten's reach - lawn fertilizer, rat and mouse poison, antifreeze, etc. Antifreeze is fatal to dogs and cats.

- Be careful with the electricity. Humans know that those things aren't for chewing, but to your cat, they are play toys dangling from the wall. Wrapping the plug in aluminum foil can do the trick.

- Try to keep your garbage can in a latched cabinet, where little paws can't reach it.

- Make sure there are no small spaces behind your refrigerator, washer, dryer, etc. A small kitten can easily get trapped back there. Also, make sure there is no kitten in the dryer or washer before you turn it on. Same with the dishwasher! Cats love dishwashers.

- Put away houseplants, which are sometimes poisonous to felines. Hanging plants seem like toys to a kitten.

- Move all sharp objects to a safe spot where cats can't get to.

- Always keep small objects away from your new friend! They love to chew things like buttons, and swallowing one can cause emergency surgery and possibly death.

Basic Cat Care

Here are some tips for caring for your cats!
1. Keep your cat indoors. It is best for the health of your pet. An indoor cat typically lives 3x longer than an outdoor cat, who faces many dangers.

2. It is possible to train a cat. Train yours to stop it from scratching at furniture, jumping on counter tops, etc. It just takes some time, effort, and patience.

3. Even if you have a short-haired cat, groom it often. This is necessary for a silky coat.

4. Play with your cat a lot. Keep it energetic and lean.

5. Take your cat to a vet regularly. This is necessary for a long, happy life.

6. Keep your cat on a balanced diet. Always have a supply of clean water available.

7. Keep yarn/long strings away unless you're watching your cat play with it. Cats can easily get choked or tangled when they wrestle the string.

8. Get a collar for your cat. In case they get lost, there's a better chance of having them found & returned to you.
